The Phone Rings and it’s … Jay Leno to talk WCW
“Say Hello to the Bad Guys” is a new book chronicling the run of the NWO (New World Order) which took over Pro Wrestling in the late 1990s in to 2000. Written by former MMA beat writer for ESPN and current Atlanta Falcons beat writer for ESPN Marc Raimondi .
Growing up in the 90’s the attitude era was the spark that spawned my love for Pro Wrestling. Whether it was the Undertaker or Stone Cold or the New World Order in World Championship Wrestling which in my opinion was the major catalyst for what is now known as one of the most influential times in Pro Wrestling.
Speaking with Marc on Knockouts and 3 Counts, we got to dive in to the book and why he decided this was the topic to write on. Marc went on to tell us how a piece he wrote on the NWO was seen by an editor at Simon & Schuster who approached him about writing a book . Marc then took us on the journey that became “Say Hello to the Bad Guys “.
In this book he spoke with everyone from the the man in charge of the madness, Eric Bischoff former Executive Producer and Senior Vice President for World Championship Wrestling, to a whole slew of other notable figures including the woman who made the NWO logo Jenni Sloan . Marc took us on his journey for the book telling us how he spent 7 hours interviewing Bischoff alone, even traveling to his house in Cody Wyoming.
In addition, Marc spoke with the likes of original member Sean “XPac” Waltman who was Sixx in WCW, and eventual members “Big Poppa Pump” Scott Steiner, Buff Bagwell, Konnan, and even Andrew Yang in over 100 interviews conducted for the book .
I asked Marc what was the most out of left field interview he conducted for the book ? He said after talking to the former Producer of “The Tonight Show” Gary Considine who he hoped could connect him with Jay Leno . Out of the blue he gets a call and it’s Jay Leno, host of The Tonight Show, ready to talk about his time in WCW. For those that don’t know, Jay Leno and his partner Diamond Dallas Page took on Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff at Road Wild in Sturgis in 1998.
“Say Hello to the Bad Guys” gives a great look in to one of the most influential groups in Pro Wrestling and the history of the NWO from a fan who lived it . In addition to the names mentioned, the likes of Sting – who could’ve been the 3rd man, Jay’s tag partner DDP, and more all sat down with Marc for the book.
